The class was shown an interview with Imelda Marcos for the topic Science and Politics, on how she supposedly affected the technology in the Philippines during her husband's time. It was about her projects that supposedly better the lives of Filipinos. It showed her concepts, her way of thinking and philosophies in life. It was a real frustrating insight into her mind. It showed that she never realized her mistakes. She never showed remorse in the entire interview. She felt that she was the victim, that everyone else betrayed her and she does not understand why. It was frustrating to know that she did not feel even a tad bit guilty about the sufferings they have caused the Filipinos. She felt that every move and projects are justified. That her lavish spending are for the people, that she serves them by representing them lavishly even though the poor kept suffering. What is even more frustrating is that she believes herself to be saintly, that all she has done God would approve of, even built herself a shrine. What she had done for the Filipinos is covered up the sufferings. Every project was rushed to show quick results. Stability of structures were not considered. They simply covered up the ugly state of the country with quick substantial solutions, and yet she spent so much time, money and even lives to satisfy her lavish lifestyle. And still she maintains that she did nothing wrong, not a single thing.

A Fictional Story
The morality of cultured organs
(Script Format)

http://aperdesign.deviantart.com/art/Dark-Room-217363268

Dark room. A man has his hands tied behind a chair, head hanging limply. The man seems battered and bruised, his clothes are ragged and have blood splattered all over. A single flickering light bulb is above him.

Man looks up and addressed the audience.

"I am Roberto Mercado. The man loved and hated by many. Called Demon by the church, and savior to some. A scientist, a doctor, a businessman, a dreamer and a realist. What for? For trying to create organs for the sick. For apparently I was playing god, I was called demon and an atheist. For creating organs outside the human body. Organs that would have saved lives without taking anyone else's."

" I lobbied for laws to allow organs that would save a dying man to be grown inside the lab. I spent years to show that the organs would benefit man not destroy them. I spent fortunes to save strangers, to prove my lifetime work's worth."

FLASHBACK

"Years of research, of reaching out, of begging for funds, of proving myself worthy was spent. Years of dreaming, of wanting to see the impossible."

Shows a man in a lab coat being frustrated with calculations and vials.

"The research was never smooth sailing. There had been many times were it seems impossible. When everything seems nothing but a mere dream. When failures seem so hard to rise from. But I persevered because of my vision. I keep on trying. I live for nothing else. And I wont accept anything less but of my dreams"

Shows protest of religious groups. Banners asking for prayers against the demon.
" Even after perfecting the craft, there are many who misunderstood my goals, my methods. There those who are quick to judgement, who calls for justice without listening to reason. But I never gave up. Even with the undue hatred I persevered."

Back to the dark room.
"Why had I worked so hard? Did I desperately want to save someone?"

FLASHBACK( He's around seven years old)
Shows a young kid, ragged and dirty.

"I was the ninth child in a family of thirteen. In this poverty it was natural for couples to have many children. More mouths to feed but also a lot of hands to work. Most children are overlooked. I was one of them, I do not know if they ever searched for me? Was I really kidnapped or sold? I want to believe that they did love me, that until now they are looking for me."

Masked men in doctor's scrubs enter. Holding surgical tools. They encircled the boy. The boy screams, howls for a long agonizing moment.

"I was a kidney donor. A rich man needs a new one, and would pay for whatever means. They did not kill me. It is not murder they say, a rich man could do a lot with my kidney than I ever would, a filth a nobody."

Back to the Room:
" I do not know how I survived. How much I studied, how much more did I sacrificed. How I got to research. All I know is I dedicated my life for this. And when the research broke through a whole new nightmare began. The religions have called against my science. They question my motives and my method. How is wanting to save everyone without sacrificing someone else more despicable to what they had done to me. To what they consistently do to children, to real living humans. What is so wrong with my test tubes and my laboratory! I never wanted revenge. I just want to save everyone else without sacrificing children. How am I more despicable than those monsters who do not understand a thing!"

Hangs his head down. Like he is so spent.

A man in red suit enters. He looks just like Roberto, but his eyes are cruel. Holding a knife.

"You are wrong. It is nature's decree that some has to die for others to survive. Stronger beasts have accepted that. We have to accept that. Why do we quietly wait for donors to die, to save ourselves or the people we love. I simply took it in my hand to ensure that they are organs for those that have money. And now you are on the way. Money and death is more natural than your science. Your dreams have been on the way for my power and for that you will suffer."

Carves out Roberto's kidney.

" I am Alberto Mercado. I am the other you, the you who has chosen power. The you that cannot be saved, does not want to be saved. After being the victim, I've striven for power that my abusers have held. And now I will continue this cycle of life. After all, an organ from a real human is more natural no matter what is the method done. Hypocritically hoping for a love ones survival by praying for some stranger's death is what humans have basically done. I am a monster created by greed and flourishes with greed."

Imelda

I didn't like how Imelda Marcos depicted herself at all in the  documentary we watched.

This documentary prove how extravagant her life was as the first lady during Marcos' Regime.  It was mentioned that she always wanted a new dress and that she never repeated a pair of shoe.  And for all I know the money used for it was not entirely her personal money.  Another thing that I learned from the video is that Imelda Marcos thinks highly of herself because of her beauty and fame. This was evident in the part where she distributed her photos to the poor and entertained a lot of photo-ops with the people. Instead of her photos, she could have distributed something that they could actually use.

I recognize the good things she made for the betterment of the country (if accounts are true) but these outweigh the cases of human rights violations that happened during Marcos' time as president, not to mention the bad economic situation of the country.  When she denied these human rights violation cases, I was very dismayed.  Declaring martial law, in itself, violates a lot of human rights.  I cannot imagine how hard their life was during those times.  And Imelda was also a part of this.

As if the Filipino people have not learned their lesson, Imelda Marcos won as governor of Ilocos last elections. That says much about our views on Politics in this country.  I just hope she's not using the taxpayer's money to fund her luxuries in life.

Music and Science

Our session on music and science made me appreciate our class even more. Normally, when you think of science, you think of theories, concepts and numbers but who would have though that science could be integrated to music?

The first songs/pieces were very literal in the sense that the lyrics were very scientific.  But as we progressed in the class, I came to the conclusion that music, in itself, is a science.  It is a science because a musician must have the ability to measure and mix the different sounds that instruments make to be able to compose good music.  Music is a science because the different instruments that we use to produce music involves the chemistry and physics of Science.

The best part of the session was they played the theme song of "The Big Bang Theory" where the video illustrated the lyrics of the song (which by the way sums up everything there is to know about science...and more!).  I enjoyed this part because I am an avid fan of TBBT. Again, it's a manifestation that music is a creative way to understand science.

Once You Go Mac, You'll Never Go Back

Have you always wanted to have your own Macbook? It's a great investment but a very costly asset.  However, there's always the saying that "once you go Mac, you'll never go back!".

Owning a Macbook is one thing but deciding what operating system to use is another thing.  Right now, my laptop is running on Mountain Lion despite the existence of an OSX update named the Mavericks.

OSX Mavericks introduces a new compressed memory feature built into Mavericks that uses the RAM more efficiently compared to Mountain Lion. This means that improvements on the speed of the start-up, applications usage and web browsing will be observed, as the new compressed memory feature makes sure that apps that have not been used in long time are compressed to ensure that it won't affect battery life and computer performance.  That's a great improvement but I'm still not convince in getting an upgrade.

OSX Mavericks introduces a feature that makes battery usage more efficient by showing the applications and their respective battery percentage share.  Through this feature, users will be able to cancel applications that take the most battery share to save energy.  This is very important because you wouldn't always get the chance to charge your Mac, especially in places without an outlet source.   Thank goodness Apple has thought of this.  It's about time.

On the lighter side of things, OSX Mavericks introduced iBooks in laptops and desktops, making it not exclusive to tablets and phones anymore.  Apple also introduced the use of tabs and tags when organizing files in your laptop.  Through this feature, users are no longer limited to creating new folders every time they create new content but makes it easier to categorize same contents.  However, these are just minor improvements.  Nothing I'm really interested in.

So, why haven't I switched to OSX Mavericks? Money is not a problem because it's free on the Apple Store (to mention that updating to OSX Mountain Lion costed almost $20).  Nor is internet speed a problem because Dilnet runs really fast in campus.  So why haven't I?

I haven't upgraded because updating to Mountain Lion made me skeptical about the OS updates of Apple.  Upgrading made my Mac's battery life decrease to 50%. What if upgrading to Mavericks decrease my battery life further, contrary to reviews provided in the internet? I cannot take that risk.  Upgrading my Mac made things all more confusing (from using a Microsoft OS) because of the new interphase.  I decided to upgrade because internet reviews were all positive so I said to myself, "why not try it?". Bad decision.

But with these new features being introduced by Apple for OSX Mavericks, I might take a chance at upgrading my Mac. Apple just needs to make things right to make us feel that we are getting the most out of what we pay for.

STORY of SCIENCE

MARIA ANGELICA S. PINON
200927411

The mind museum's visit in the class was a very much appreciated treat. The visit reminded us that learning science is FUN. No matter what age, it seems science can be made interesting with the proper materials. As a Bachelors in Elementary Education Science and Health major, the existence of a science museum is a great thing for us. Meaningful field trips for can be boring topic we have is possible. The experiments they presented are also great ice breakers for several topics that would normally be boring with just paper and pen materials.

I really liked their approach of teaching science as a story not a branch by branch seemingly unrelated principles. Stories for me are easier to absorbed and process, plus it infinitely more interesting. The ticket sale was also really tempting from P700 to P150, unfortunately it is already hell month, requirements requirements all around. Next time hopefully I would get to visit the Mind Museum with my future students and let them be inspired as I had been when we were visited.
