The catch - Time travel

Time travel is a very interesting topic, it actually peaks my interest. I usually watch science documentaries of the sort. The documentary featured the world’s leading theoretical and astrophysicist in which they showed their views and theories about the said topic.
A learned a lot of new concepts about time traveling. I realized that one must master the concept of time. Theorists today view time as a dimension, the space-time dimension. This is very mind boggling for it introduces a new concept that is quite far-fetch to laymen. But one of my favorite physicist, Dr. Michio Kaku, explained that the 4th dimension is just simply inconceivable to us as the concept of “up” for 2D games like pacman. They each introduced their theories on how to travel time. They first laid facts and the proof that time traveling is possible. The first reason was mechanically shown by comparing the relative distances a light tick will travel. For the one moving at the speed of light, time propagates slower than the one who is still. This is the proof that time is not absolute, it does not pass by in a continuous and fixed rate. Another misconception is that there is a now well in fact we can’t unify and synchronize time in the universe. Although some views are purely theoretical at the moment such as the cosmic strings and wormholes there are some theories that have logical proofs. One is time travel by the use of light,  because light controls energy, energy controls gravity and gravity controls time, therefore light can control energy. The Experiment itself is rigorous but it is yet to be improved.

In all I am really glad the class gave time to really interesting topics of the sort. I mean think about all the possibilities we can attain if time travel is to exist. I say it’s limitless. Although there may be some groups against time traveling because of “moral” issues I still think that developing a way to control or travel in time will be a great help for the development of mankind. We are not just interested in sending people in time but also relevant information such as medicines, breakthroughs and news from the future!

Cancer Talks

MARIA ANGELICA PINON
200927411

I do not like podcasts. I am a visual learner so for me to properly absorbed a topic I at least need to see them mouth the words. But this podcast is interesting enough that I tried to absorb it. The podcast entitled Rhetoric of cancer is about how those affected by cancer can describe it. The general answer of people is to use words such as battle, war and enemies. In effect giving us the idea of a war zone of conflict within each individual. That description makes the narrator dissatisfied, he does not want to consider any part of his body as an enemy. He searches even further to have a different answer or at least a different interpretation.

I liked his conclusion, on how no matter how bleak the situation is they have still discovered silver linings around. They did not give up and focused on the negative side, yes we cannot deny it is a bad thing to happen but they continue to live. Cancer has given them the sense of life and urgency. The strength they have gathered due to experience has them living on not just fighting. I liked how this podcast has focused not on the gory scary details but on the little bit of light he tried hard to discover.

Time Oras Tiempo Zeit Tijd Tempo Am

The topic now would be about time, more so time travel. Time travel has been a topic of science fiction novels and mysteries for a while now. The concept of time has always been a curiosity to all, and travel at the fourth dimension is an experience everyone is curious to achieve. The video last Tuesday talks about the possibility of time travel. That time travel had been observed for a long time, not by mankind but by the rays of our sun. The speed traveled by light is so fast that the current one we are observing has passed around 8 minutes already. The attempt for time travel can then be founded on that approach, traveling at speed exceeding light maybe we can travel through time as well.

The problem would now be how can we travel as fast as light? Where can we get the energy to perform such act? Can the human body be fit enough to travel at such speed? The answers to these questions we shall wait for the scientists to answer. Another thing I’d like to consider that was not discussed in the video is how do we travel back? Travelling at such speed allows light to travel in time but only to the future. I do not think there is much merit if we travel forward only to be stuck there. Time travel such a conundrum. We probably have to bend a lot of laws of physics before we can do it, and I do not think anyone has completely understand the laws of this world for it to be possible to bend them. YET. I guess only time will tell.

NO TIME TO READ?

I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO READ :(

Okay, this film got me really sad. I think the purpose of the Twilight Zone series is to make the people scared of something that can actually happen. The plot of the story is somewhat believable because the of the devastating results of an atomic bomb. Everything got wiped out and no one survived. I am just not sure about someone being locked in a vault can really save him from the devastating results of an atomic bomb. Nevertheless, it is still good. The sad part about it is that main character was not given the chance to read leisurely by the wife and boss. This ignited the main character's decision to stay inside the vault and just read. This was also the reason why the main character survived in the first place. The scene where he went inside the vault, sat down, and looked at the book was really moving. I felt his genuine happiness just by reading a book or a newspaper. The idea of him reading makes him happy. This scene made me realize how I under estimated the power of reading. It made me feel like that I wish I could turn back time and just read books in my shelves. This feeling of mine got worse when survived the atomic bomb and found the public library. Even though he was alone, he felt happy because of all the book available for him to read. He did not care how he will survive, all he care about is to finish all the books available in front of him.

This made me realize again the importance of reading. It can take you places, it can expand your knowledge, it makes you creative. Yet, I was not able to give reading books the chance. I know this was suppose to scare me or something but this movie made me realize one thing.

GO OUT AND READ A BOOK.

I can always have the time. I just don't prioritize it.

A Different Kind of Trip

Can I just say that this short film is so entertaining you could not blink? In my opinion, it is very fun to watch films from the past because I tend to appreciate more the effort in making a simple film today. The simplicity of the story, the set, the characters, and the humor makes it even more special. I do not have to think too much on the story or identifying who the actors are, I am just there to watch and appreciate the film from the past.

According to my professor, it was the first time that people was able to see a motion picture after the World War I. I can imagine the astonishment of the people at that time. To be able to see a moving picture for the first time is very amazing as compare to seeing only still pictures for years.

If I were to time travel to that time seeing the "Trip to the Moon" for the first time and compare it to the films of the now, all I can say is "WOW!"

As I said, the films before were very simple as compare to the now. Before, they do not need famous characters. If you look at the films today, most of them rely on how bankable the actors are and neglect the fact that objective of the film is to tell a story and not showcase how a particular actor can endorse a detergent powder. Before, they do not even need a extravagant set. All they need is a simple room where they can do wonders by providing man-made background, man-made props, man-made everything. Obviously, their budget before was really small as compare to the present films. What surprised me a bit is the fact that they already have the concept of special effects that are really believable. The scene where people from earth are trying to kill the people from the moon, and every time it happens, people from the moon transform into dusts. In my opinion, that particular special effect was so effective and entertaining at the same time. Before, their stories are not that complicated. Or maybe not. Nevertheless, it is still a very fun movie to watch even if the it was made I-don't-know-many-years-ago.

I am now able to appreciate more the films that are made today especially the films with special effects or even animated ones. The amount of effort put into it cannot be leveled by how the films were made made before. I really hope I can time travel.

All the Time

by John Jason B. Santillan
     2013-03535

The movie happened somewhere between World War I and World War II. Giving consideration to the political tensions in those times, I would continue the movie by having the rescue missions arrive shortly afterwards. Months or years later, the Soviet Union would be defeated and they finally establish the United Nations. At that time, the states would agree to give compensation for the damage that they have done. In this case, the main character would be given new glasses. However, he would request for another treatment for fear of having his glasses broken again in the future. This would then spark development in Eye-Laser treatment study and the main character would be one of its first recipients. The main character would then restart his life as a librarian in a different state in America. Finally, he would have all the time to read with the aid of his technologically-enabled perfect eye-sight.

Trip to the Moon

by John Jason B. Santillan
     2013-03535

I like that it tries to open a sensitive topic in science at that time i.e. extra-terrestrial life. The emphasis it gave on the construction of the rocket symbolized the hurdles and difficulties that scientists had to overcome for years. Any viewer at that time would have had their curiosity and excitement boosted in anticipation for the actual landing. I liked how they attempted to illustrate the loneliness and barrenness of the moon. Viewers would also have been entertained by the creative portrayal of aliens and their behavior. The only thing that I didn't like is the message being forwarded when they fought aliens. It contributed to the idea that inevetably we would have to fight against species outside earth and that tension between is guaranteed. Overall, I think the film was well-made.

Classic

A classic-made masterpiece, Trip to the Moon captivates your mind into the wonders of early cinematography. Living in the century where the big screen is filled with all those magnificent and realistic special effects makes me see how far film can go and ideas more possible. Watching this movie makes me appreciate the early days of film even more. The ability of encapsulating so much detail in a short time was impressive. Maybe, watching this film at the time it was made would leave me with much greater awe; First maybe because it is something new back then, or because the plot of the entire film was just so remarkable. But looking at this now I would rather say because, it delivers so much to the audience in complete motion, triumphant music and inexistent voices, well that is definitely something.

All the time

I would like to start my reaction with a brief summary. The episode was about a man who is fond of reading. He was hindered by his wife and his boss. One time he sneaked down the vault of the bank, there was an apparent nuclear war that took place leaving him alone in the world. At first he was upset and lonely but realizing that he has all the time in the world he turned his direction back into reading books. Unfortunately during one event he dropped his glasses and broke the lenses. The story has moral points. Although I want to stress out that the plot was quite impossible. Yes nuclear war may be possible but has really slim chances and to survive one has even lower. Another thing is that he is the only one survived the nuclear war quite impossible indeed. Another is that all the books weren't burnt and even the canned goods are still in tact.

If i were to write an update or continuation, it will go like this. Days after he apparently lost his glasses a band of surviving children came to his aide. Two of them were very young and haven’t received education, the eldest finished elementary. They came rushing to the man but they were very silent as to they are not into speaking. As the man asked who were there helping him, he can only distinguish two voices, from the two children. As the story progresses it is revealed that the educated one can’t speak. They will work their way out and eventually finding a way to get the man his new pair of glasses. And he will educate the three with lessons that he has learned in reading.

Trip to the Moon!

“Trip to the moon” is a classic cinema work that was proposed to be shown in black and white and in color. It is said to be colored frame by frame. Definitely restoring it was not easy for the colored copy was sometime lost and only been found on the year 1999. There were damaged frames so editors needed the black and white version and painted it frame by frame. Knowing how much effort was put into this work intrigued me, i deduce that this must be a very important classic cinema work.

I will criticize this work as if i was born in the 1900’s and did not have firm educational background, which was obviously very limited at that time. It is a silent film, no dialogues involved. The sound was great. It carried the emotions of the story through it’s rhythm. The different colors indicated different moods. Now let’s go the more interesting part; the story. The plot is of course about the trip to the moon. At first the plot is still normal. The time where the scientist persuades the sponsors although one of them seemingly contradicts the approval of the other sponsors. The next thing that happened was the building the vehicle that would later fire them to the moon. It was very interesting that the vehicle closely resembles a bullet because bullets move in high speeds and maybe that is what the director is trying to show. Next the scientists were fired to the moon. And there they encountered alien forms. They escaped and went down to earth. They have a somewhat tropical imagination of the surface of the moon. It is very intriguing because it shows water or lakes on the moon. Another thing interesting is the concept of other life forms. I think that the director placed humans over aliens because of the fact that they were able to escape and even eradicate some of the alien.

All in all the classic work is great. It was original, the plot. It was daring, showing and introducing alien life forms.

Time and Companions

"No man is an island"

It is said that a man will survive his life without a companion. For me, an individual is as important as an institution. Both should work together to be able to survive.

In the movie, it seemed that the actor did not have the time to do the things he wants because of external factors like his work and family duties.  However, as a disaster took place (taking the life of everyone on Earth), he finally got what he always wanted to do, to read.

It is said that one cannot always get what he wants.  And I think this is the moral of the story.  The protagonist's intention were all personal, one thing that led to his misery. Without anyone to help him when he broke his eyeglasses, he realized the real importance of his companions.  Without anyone or without something, he is helpless. But beyond this, I think the movie wants us to realize how important people and that we should treasure our moments with them.

Even if you are the man with all the time in the world, if you do not have anyone to share it with, life becomes boring and useless.

What a Tragedy

The film was unrealistic. I just don't believe it, especially the part where the man's pair of glasses only broke when it was dropped from a height much smaller than the impact of the bomb that made him fall to the ground. Another thing that puzzled me was the groceries and books that were still there, when everything else was blown up by the massive bomb. May I say I was really stressed, just thinking whether the plot was possible or not.
But of course, I had to let my worries go for me to enjoy the movie. I let my heart rule me instead. There, I was able to see what the man just went through. He was all alone, and he had all the time in the world. He didn't have to work, or please his monstrous wife. He was finally free! But he was lonely and needless to say, bored, because he had nothing to do any more.
I felt glad for him when he saw the books from a large library, still intact, stacked just for him. To my eyes, those stacks were glowing, since I have not enough cash to buy books I want to read, nor do I have Internet connection at home to download e-books. I felt his joy and I was inwardly celebrating with him until his glasses fell to the ground. It was saddening. Heartbreaking to see all his bubble dreams pop as his glasses shattered. What a tragedy.

My Take on 'Trip to the Moon'

A teenager like me who lives in the 21st century had most likely already witnessed today's forms of technology, and films are definitely not an exception to those. As a child who grew up in the city, I often go to cinemas with my family, with my friends, or just all by myself. And the films today are of high definition and quality. That's why seeing an old film like 'Trip to the Moon' gives a different feeling.
First of all, the given film, 'Trip to the Moon' has no dialogues. It only has background music as audio, plus large, stylized movements to illustrate the story. It's a lot different from my the movies I got used to. Second, it is originally black and white, but it was painted frame by frame. I repeat, FRAME BY FRAME. A lot of patience and hard work there. And I was able to confirm that it was really painted when I looked at the moving picture closely. Just fascinating, right?
Another thing that set it apart from today's films was its visualization of the Moon. It was a lot different from what we were taught. I find it funny to see the characters interacting with the creatures living on the Moon when we were all taught that life exists only on planet Earth.
Overall, I enjoyed watching that film, which was like the 'grandfather' of today's movies. It may be old, but it served as the foundation for innovation, which is manifested in today's films.

Space delivery boy. Futurama!

I really enjoy watching comedy series. I appreciate it even if it’s in cartoon form. It actually gives a comic relief from the serious stuff and it relaxes or lighten our mood. Futurama is an adult sitcom, probably because of some of its rather violent scenes, that aired its first episode way back in March 28, 1999 which is almost 15 years ago. Its first episode “Space Pilot 3000” introduces the main character, Philip J. Fry. He apparently ended up in a cryogenic freezing accident that allowed him to awaken only after a thousand years. Futurama in general is largely influenced by classic science fiction series like Star Trek and The Jetsons.
Since the concept of the series is inspired by Star Trek, they showed a lot of imagination of the possible future. One of which is space travelling. Like the last scene where Fry was recruited as a crew-delivery boy on his nephew’s space ship. Another interesting imagination presented is about the suicide machine. I think It symbolizes something very deep. Since the targeted viewers are young adults, it speaks of morality in a way that we shouldn’t throw our lives away. Like the suicidal robot named Bender, we can always cheer ourselves up and go on. Another interesting take aside from the vision of flying cars, are the matching tubes of transportation. It closely resembles water tubes but instead the transportation of water, humans are transported. The future is viewed in a very creative way in short. It has lots of positive imaginations such as the mode of transportation made efficient. But there also negative such as the suicide machine and the way of living dictated by the very technology themselves. Science is again viewed as a double edged sword. It has really nice pros such as the improvement of technology and so forth. But during the time Fry was “frozen” in the tube, I can’t help but notice the robots gone wild and attacking the city of New York. As a result New York wasn’t the same again when he woke up. It was just a wasteland. Although the character has no sentiment to the place I still think that the city’s destruction is a symbolism to the catastrophe caused by the cons of technology.

Fry travelled in time by the accidental cryogenic freezing that made him still until he was defrosted 1000 years after the accident. It differs from series like “Back to The Future” where the character has this time machine.

Life is Unfair for it is Just

MARIA ANGELICA S. PINON
200927411

The film was heartbreaking for me. The main character has a simple vice, it does not hurt anyone nor take money from anyone. It does take time, time that his wife and boss wants for themselves. He does not fight them head on but finds a way to be fulfilled with reading. He is simple that the existence of books to read makes it okay again for him to live. He already lost everything but found the library which s filled with his desires, then he isn't equipped to read anymore. Suddenly his whole world collapses, as if he was punished by the gods. Like Tantalus who is forever to watch the fruits and the water but will never be able to satiate his hunger, the main character has the all the books he wants but would never be able to read.

The idea of not being allowed to read is a nightmare for me. I guess at that time reading is unproductive for them. If I cannot read books anymore and audio books are also not possible I would really rather die. Morbid I know but books, stories or any reading materials has always been an aching need for me. I guess the film can be paralleled with the fact that there was a time that education is limited to few rich people, those that can afford the time to think. The workers in the film are probably expected to simply work without question and thought.

The film in that kind of social and political environment would be possible, he would be cut off from the world. But if it had happen now, I don't think reading would be restricted or if his reading is restricted their are probably a lot of lawyers who can argue his case and demand compensation. If he did solely survived a Hydrogen Bombing site help would probably arrive faster now. The film is short but it really captures your attention. I believed that there is no need to change and adapt the film to this day because it would be a good reminder not to take for granted the things we have today, the freedom we have to look for information and absorbed them.

MOONSHINE

MARIA ANGELICA PINON200927411

This is a day to be written down in history. For today the first MOTION PICTURE was shown. The MOTION PICTURE was inspired by the novel of Jules Verne From the Earth to the Moon. For years people have been afraid that photographs may capture a person's soul, now after seeing the people move and interact inside a flat surface. What sorcery! What amazing product of science is this MOTION PICTURE! The accompanying music was superb but all had to focus on the magic on the screen. Next thing we know we really would be sending men on the moon.

Me from the Past when the First Motion Picture is Shown

The Film is interesting if we had to considered the time and technology when it was created. But as a person from this century when films are too realistic and mind blogging. The topic was kind of funny since we now know how far off their expectations of the moon and the reality that our scientists have been observing. The way of travel to the moon was especially laughable since they considered a cannon launch of type. The need of air was neglected and the moon was considered as if they are just in another continent where the terrain and wild life is just a tad bit different. But since it is one of the first film ever meaning the technology was so obsolete we have to commend their imagination and techniques. Besides the films now wont exist if it had not started from that humble beginning. The imaginations and creativity they must have to create the first film.

Me from the Present when the film was shown in STS

Thumbs UP!

"Is this sorcery? How could this even be possible! I am in awe! Jaw dropping innovation my friends!" This would probably be my reaction to the movie "Trip to the Moon". I would be probably be outside telling other people to watch and experience this weird but amazing creation! i would be spreading the news all over town and would encourage them to not miss this first ever movie! Plus, pictures were finally moving on screen! Not only that, there were colors too! And did i mention how hilarious the movie was? They even went to the moon and encountered some strange creatures! How cool is that? I just cant wait to tell everyone about this wonderful thing that I've just seen! It's just amazing!
As you can see, my reaction to the movie,if ever i lived during that time, would be like the one I've written on the paragraph above. Over acting isn't it? But, who could ever blame me for such ignorance? I mean, something new would definitely excite a person. Something like moving pictures on the big screen, which was still unusual during that time, would definitely bring curiosity to the people.
Everyday, people are trying to look for ways to create something new, something innovative, something fresh. And every single day, something new just comes out of the blue and people would put their eyes to it. This of course applies to movies. Imagine how things changed? From that simple movie, we already have 3d movies with special effects and different color schemes! Everything has improved. And I am truly glad that a person had that wonderful idea to create a movie called "Trip to the Moon". Kudos to you Georges Méliès! I give you my two thumbs up!
